Bespoke music and sound logos

Music largely decides how you experience something. The same picture becomes tense, moving or funny just because of what’s playing underneath. That’s why the first question I ask on any job is: what should the viewer feel? Only then do I start composing.

I started out making music on the Atari ST and the Commodore Amiga, and in 2002 I graduated as an applied composer from the Utrecht School of the Arts. Since then I’ve written music for corporate films, animation, commercials, podcasts and short films.

Bespoke music

Orchestral, acoustic, electronic.. anything is possible. The beauty of bespoke music is that it moves exactly with the picture. When the story takes a turn or the product appears, the music does too. That almost never works with a piece of stock music.

I usually start with a few short sketches, so you quickly hear which direction it’s going. Then I work it out, and I keep going until everyone is happy with the end result.

Sound logos

A sound logo is the sound of your brand in a few seconds. Think of those few notes at the end of a commercial that you recognise straight away, even when you’re not watching. I made one for Lightyear. A good sound logo suits the brand, sticks in your head and works everywhere, from a commercial to a podcast or an app.

Stock music

No budget for bespoke music? Then I’m happy to find fitting stock music for you. That’s a craft too: finding the right track among thousands of others, then cutting and adjusting it so it sounds as if it was written for your picture. Something for every budget.
